People often ask me what Svala means and why I chose this name for my company. I just wanted to share with you why I chose this name! Svala is one of my favorite Icelandic girl’s names, meaning “bird” or “swallow”. Although I grew up in Australia, my mother is from Iceland and was always making sure that she immersed us in Icelandic culture, teaching us the language and traditions. As such, I have always had a strong connection and affinity for Iceland.
I also love the symbolism of the swallow and am drawn to their meaning. This little bird has been revered over the centuries by many different cultures. It has been associated with hope, freedom, health, wealth and loyalty.
For instance, in ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian mythology, deities were able to transform into a swallow. In ancient Greece, the swallow was associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of Love, and was believed to bring good luck and happiness.
Also, the swallow has always been a symbol of hope for sailors as these birds were usually the first sign that land was near (before navigation technology) and in some cultures, the first swallow of spring is a very fortunate sight because it is an omen of success.
The swallow is a bird that chooses a mate for life and therefore represents love and loyalty. It is for all these reasons and more that I chose the name Svala. I hope you like it as much as I do!
Lots of love,
