Setting your intentions for 2017

Happy New Year to all! The start of a new year can be both exciting and daunting for many. January 1 marks a clean slate full of freshness and opportunity. But sometimes the sense of responsibility that comes along with this can be overwhelming.

Below are a few ways to clear your mind and set your intentions for 2017 so you can move towards having a joyous year full of love, happiness and fulfillment.

Reflect on 2016

Set aside some time to reflect on last year. Whether you had a great year or a particularly difficult one, think about what resonated positively with you that you would like to bring into the new year and what you would like to leave behind in 2016. Practice gratitude for the positive things that 2016 brought you.

Write down your wish list for 2017

Create a list of your intentions for 2017. It can be anything from starting your own business, adopting a dog, becoming healthier and stronger, doing more volunteer work or having more fun in your life. Let your mind wander. The sky is the limit! For a well rounded list, sort your intentions into categories such as health, career, relationships, finances….whatever works for you.

Set realistic goals for yourself

Once you have finalized your wish list, really focus on what are the most important things you would like to achieve for 2017 and then set realistic goals for yourself. You might want to start your own business, learn Spanish, go backpacking around the world, get a black belt in karate, move to a different country and earn a degree. If you can easily do all of that in a year then good for you! But the less stressful option might be to hone in on what is most important to you in the near future so you are not spreading yourself too thin and are still able to enjoy life.

Make the commitment every day to set your intentions

Make the commitment to yourself to set your intentions every day. It might help to create a journal for yourself or a daily list to keep you on track. But every day doesn’t need to be full of tasks and schedules. Maybe your intention on weekends is to have fun, relax, see your friends and rejuvenate. Setting your intentions every day gives you the space to reflect on what is really important to you and also gives you the chance to adjust your goals or timing if necessary.
